Following a series of meetings with Wireless
Telegraphy officials in early 1984, I formally applied for a special permit
to operate on 50 Mhz based on criteria suggested by the local authorities.
The main restriction was to be the input power as at the time RAI, the
Italian State TV was still transmitting on 50 Mhz from Monte Lauro in Sicily
some 70 miles away, however the local authorities were willing to consider
granting a permit providing neighbouring countries did not object. For
the next three years I followed up my application with various informal
meetings and correspondence during which I was given approval to import
the necessary equipment to operate on six. As a result, on 14th May 1987
I personally presented a letter to the CIWT requesting permission to operate
my station on 18, 24, and 50 Mhz and was finally solely granted permission
to operate on these bands by means of a letter dated 22nd MAY 1987. The
Chief Inspector of Wireless Telegraphy then started considering applications
from Class A licencees on an individual basis and eventually six became
available to Class B licencees as well and operating conditions improved
for all.
